Zusammenfassung:	PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp being able to restrain the excessive rise of the temperature of the lamp on lighting and equipped with an external electrode capable of easy insulation coordination and to provide an illumination apparatus using it. SOLUTION: A heat radiating means 40 of an elastic material comprising a silicon rubber provided with an insulation ability and high heat conductivity are housed in a space 22 so as to accommodate the case 20 to cover an external electrode 12 and to contact the longitudinal direction of the external electrode 12. In addition, the heat radiating means 40 are formed in due consideration to the heat conduction by covering the external electrode 12 and a ventilation hole 50 is also provided. As a result, the temperature of the whole lamp can be maintained without excessive rise and the reduction of the ultraviolet radiation efficiency can be also prevented.
