PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To contribute to a succession and a prevail of a tradition of Japanese cypress bark roofing by automating a barking step for making the cypress barks (epidermis) used for the bark roofing in the same thickness and realizing a mass production of the cypress bark (epidermis) of high quality. SOLUTION: A periblem 1 is placed on a table 16. A cutter 31 is contacted with a butt end of the hide 1 while retaining the periblem 1 on the table 16, and moved in parallel with the table 16 to slice the periblem 1. Such a slicing operation is repeated necessary times while changing a height position of the table 16 by a height regulating mechanism 20. Thus, an endodermis and an exodermis are removed from the periblem 1, and the epidermis of a predetermined thickness is obtained.
