Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide carbon fiber and graphite fiber each having high mechanical strength through stable and highly efficient flameproofing treatment even in case an acrylic fiber as starting material is in the form of a high-density fiber yarn as a joined bundle of many fiber bundles. SOLUTION: The subject method for producing carbon fiber comprises a flameproofing treatment of an acrylic fiber at 180-300 deg.C in an atmosphere containing organic compound vapor followed by carbonizing treatment of the resultant fiber at 800-2,000 deg.C in an inert atmosphere.
