Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make the best use of the merits of a three-plate type projector and a single-plate type projector and to mitigate the demerits of both of them by combining the characteristics of both of them. SOLUTION: Out of the light beams of each color component R, G and B emitted from a three-color light source 100, the light beams R and G are made incident on a 1st liquid crystal display device 110 and respectively modulated by the device 110. Then, the light beam G is made incident on a 2nd liquid crystal display device 120 and modulated by the device 120. The device 110 is provided corresponding to two image pickup pixels on one lens surface 230A of a microlens 230 so as to guide the light beams of two color components R and B to each pixels. The device 120 is provided corresponding to one image pickup pixel on one lens surface 330A of a microlens 330 so as to guide the light beam of the color component G to the respective pixels. Thus, the two- plate type liquid crystal projector is constituted of the devices 110 and 120.
