Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an industrially extremely advantageous method for hydrogenating a heavy oil, capable of suppressing crystal growth of iron sulfide fine particle in a hydrogenation treatment reaction and efficiently hydrogenating unfavorable components such as metal compounds of asphaltene, vanadium, nickel, etc., and sulfur and nitrogen compounds, etc., contained in a heavy oil with a small amount of a catalyst. SOLUTION: In this method for hydrogenating a heavy oil using hydrogen sulfide and an iron-based catalyst, a colloidal iron dispersion of dispersion in oil type is used as the iron-based catalyst.
