SOLUTION: In a compression brake mode, hydraulic operating fluid is retained in a compression brake hydraulic lash adjuster 410, where it causes at least one associated valve to operate, while a positive power hydraulic lash adjuster 409 operates the at least one associated valve, with the result that at least one exhaust valve is opened near the top dead center of the associated piston, and at least one intake valve is opened near the bottom dead center of the associated piston to provide a two-cycle engine compression brake.
