SOLUTION: The color separation optical system that separates light from a light source into 1st, 2nd and 3rd color light, is provide with a 1st mirror 61A that reflects the 1st color light and transmits the 2nd and 3rd color light, a 2nd mirror 62A that reflects the 2nd and 3rd color light and transmits the 1st color light, 3rd and 4th mirrors 61B, 62B that reflect a wavelength band of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd color light respectively, and a 5th mirror 9 that transmits the 2nd color light in the 2nd and 3rd color light and reflects the 3rd color light or reflects the 2nd color light and transmits the 3rd color light. The 1st mirror and the 3rd mirror, and the 2nd mirror and the 4th mirror are placed respectively to form the same plane, the plane configured by the 1st mirror and the 3rd mirror is orthogonal to the plane configured by the 2nd mirror and the 4th mirror, and the 1st mirror and the 2nd mirror are placed adjacent to each other.
