Zusammenfassung: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal optical material showing a reversible optical switching memory function in which heat-mode writing using a thermal electro-optic effect and erasing by an electric field effect can be performed, having a stable memory function in a wide temperature range including room temperature, making fast thermal writing possible with low output by laser light and having high contrast. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal optical material consists of a ternary composite system consisting of a side-chain liquid crystal copolymer, low mol.wt. liquid crystal and chiral dopant, or a quaternary or pentanary composite system with addition of a polymer network formed from a photopolymerizable monomer and/or a thermosensitive dye to the ternary composite system. A preferable example of the side-chain liquid crystal copolymer is expressed by the following general formula I.
