Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide roof support which forms a roof part at the front of a tunnel boring machine, which is easily movable, and which makes it possible to reinforce a pit wall immediately after boring, from an opening part at the front of the tunnel boring machine after the roof support has been moved. SOLUTION: An open type tunnel boring machine capable of boring hard rocks includes: roof support 30 forming a roof part at the front of the tunnel boring machine 1; a moving truck 36a connected to the roof support 30 to support the roof support 30 and being movable on a longitudinally extending guide rail 38 in the direction of the axis of a tunnel; and a lift mechanism 37 interposed between the roof support 30 and the moving truck 36a and capable of lifting or lowering the roof support 30 by a predetermined height.
