Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound with thermal stability, low volatility and effective antimicrobial activity, having greatly reduced migration tendency, and useful as an antimicrobial agent for plastics, coating materials or the like exposed to environment contaminated with microorganisms. SOLUTION: This compound is a compound of formula I (R1 and R2 are each H, OH or the like, R3 is H, a 1-20C alkyl or the like, R4 is H, formyl or the like, when OH is at the para-position with respect to the ether linkage; R2 is H, 1-20C alkyl or the like, R1 and R3 are each H, 1-6C alkylcarbonyl or the like, R4 is H, OH or the like, when OH is at a meta-position with respect to the ether linkage; R7 is H, 1-6C alkylcarbonyl or the like, R4 is H, acetonitrile or the like, R2 and R3 are each H, a 1-20C alkyl or the like, when OH is at an ortho-position with respect to the ether linkage; however, excluding e.g. a compound wherein OH is at the para-position with respect to the ether linkage, R1 and R3 are both H, and also R2 is methoxy or methyl) (e.g. a compound of formula II). This compound of formula I is used as an antimicrobial agent also used, for example, for antimicrobial treatment of the skin, hair or the like.
