Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make low-cost, small-sized, and simple the system which optically detects and images the distance to an object. SOLUTION: This system is a system which optically detects the distance to the object 14 and images it in three dimensions. For only distance detection, a single optical detector 18 detects reflected light from the object irradiated alternately by a couple of stroboscopic light sources L1 and L2 or a single light source which emits flash light directly or as a virtual image. The ratio of illumination between the direction light source and the light source of the virtual image is calculated by subtracting ambient light from the output signal of the optical detector as to each irradiating light and the distance to the object is determined according to the ratio. When the object is imaged, an array of optical detectors is used and the calculated distance is mapped by using the coordinates of the optical detectors to obtain a three-dimensional image. This system is applicable to a passenger detection sensor for a vehicle equipped with a passenger protection air bag system.
