Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal which can eliminate or reduce the temperature dependency of switching characteristics, and to provide a liquid crystal shutter. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal composition comprises a host substance which can exhibit a smectic C phase, and a chiral dopant material which can impart chirality to the host substance or enhance the chirality of the host substance. A response time-voltage curve has a minimum point for minimizing the response time, and is changed in response to temperature. The chiral dopant material contains the first chiral center and the second chiral center. The temperature coefficient of the spontaneous polarization of the second chiral center is larger than the temperature coefficient of the spontaneous polarization of the first chiral center, and the temperature coefficient of the spontaneous polarization of the second chiral center and the temperature coefficient of the spontaneous polarization of the first chiral center are complementary each other. The first chiral center and the second chiral center exist in such relative amounts that the response time-voltage curves are approximately coincident with each other within the above-described prescribed temperature range.
