SOLUTION: When supplying muddy water from a ground facility 30 to a face 46 via a mud-supplying duct 44, a thickener composition for increasing the viscosity of the muddy water, which is stored in a thickener tank 50, is added to the muddy water with its amount adjusted using a control device 62 based on the determination by a viscometer 60, face data, etc. Here, the thickener composition contains a water-soluble polymeric flocculant, a cellulose derivative- or starch derivative-thickener and a dispersant and is in a liquid state having a viscosity of 100 to 10,000 mPa.s.
