SEPARATORY PURIFICATION OF ALKYLPHENOL

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform a separatory purification of an alkylphenol useful as e.g. an intermediate for syntheses by a simple means by converting a mixture containing the alkylphenol and other(s) to a host-guest complex followed by isolating and recovering the alkylphenol from the complex under specified conditions. SOLUTION: This separatory purification of an alkylphenol is performed by the following process: a mixture of the alkylphenol such as cresol and other organic compound(s) is contacted with 1,1-di(4-hydroxyphenyl)cyclohexane as host compound to form a host-guest complex containing the alkylphenol as guest compound; subsequently, the complex is further contacted with a 2nd guest compound (solution) capable of forming a 2nd host-guest complex with the 1,1-di(4-hydroxyphenyl)cyclohexane (e.g. an alcohol, nitrile) to substitute the 2nd guest compound for the alkylphenol, which is thus isolated and recovered.
