PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain good image quality by accurately normalizing the read value of a density sensor without installing a reference correction member and without necessitating a mechanism for moving the density sensor, and executing a process control. SOLUTION: A density detection pattern is formed on an image carrier, or a transfer material carrier, or an intermediate transfer body. In the case of detecting the density detection pattern by a diffuse reflection type detecting sensor 33 and a regular reflection type density detecting sensor 35, a value obtained when the density of the density detection pattern is detected by the sensor 33 is normalized based on a value obtained when the surface of the image carrier, or the transfer material carrier, or the intermediate transfer body is detected by the sensor 35.
