Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device of high contrast without leaking light or alignment failure and to provide a fast-responding liquid crystal display device. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal display device consists of a pair of substrates 11 at least one of which is transparent, liquid crystal layer held between the pair of substrates 11, electrode group formed on at least one of the pair of substrates 11 to apply an electric field on the liquid crystal layer 12, alignment film to control the alignment of the liquid crystal layer 12, and optical means which has a spacer to control the thickness of the liquid crystal layer 12 and which changes its optical characteristics based on the aligned state of molecules in the liquid crystal layer 12. In this device, the spacer having a larger particle size than the thickness of the liquid crystal layer 12 is used and fixed in recesses formed in a nonpicture part.
