Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a barrier coating which is more effective than a wax and more readily removable from paper fibers than the wax. SOLUTION: This method for modifying a paper substrate comprises applying a polymer containing (a) 1-100 pts.wt. of at least one kind of a 12-40C alkyl ester of (meth)acrylic acid, (b) 0-99 pts.wt. of at least one kind of ethylenically unsaturated monomer and (c) 0-15 pts.wt. of at least one kind of ethylenically unsaturated acid-containing monomer or a salt thereof as polymerization units to the paper substrate.
