Zusammenfassung:	PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a highly viscous O/W type emulsion having a high viscosity, even when not thickened with a polymer or the like, having excellent emulsion stability, comprising ultrafine particles, and having a transparent or semi- transparent appearance, and to provide a method for producing the O/W type emulsion, enabling the efficient production of the O/W type emulsion having the characteristics. SOLUTION: This O/W type emulsion having a viscosity of 10 times or larger that of a preliminary emulsion is obtained by mixing an oil phase and an aqueous phase which contain an oily component and a liquid crystal-forming emulsifier, thus preparing the preliminary emulsion used for the O/W type emulsion and containing the oily component as a dispersoid, and subsequently secondarily emulsifying the preliminary emulsion by the use of a high pressure homogenizer. Since the O/W type emulsion is thickened in the secondary emulsifying process after the preparation of the preliminary emulsion, the highly viscous O/W type emulsion can easily be produced in comparison with a method for thickening the emulsion with a thickening agent. The method for producing the O/W type emulsion is thereby suitable as a method for producing a highly viscous O/W type emulsion.
