Zusammenfassung:	PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a detergent excellent in deterging power and lustering property as well as in biodegradability and suitable for cleaning a large metal product and the like by employing a specific compound. SOLUTION: The objective metal surface detergent comprises a compound represented by the formula. In the formula, R1 is H, methyl, ethyl or hydroxyethyl; R2 and R3 are each methyl, ethyl, hydroxyethyl or a group represented by -R5OCOR6 or -R7NHCOR8; R4 is a group represented by -R5 OCOR6 or -R7NHCOR8; R5 and R7 are each alkylene; R6 and R8 are each a residue formed by removing carboxylic group from a fatty acid; and X is an anionic atom or an anionic group. R6 and R8 are preferably a residue formed by removing a carboxylic group from an 8-22C fatty acid. The metal surface detergent is usually compounded in an amount of about 0.1-10 wt.% in a medium consisting mainly of water and can be used jointly with another component.
