PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To exactly detect a recognizing object and to recognize it even when the position of an input image as the recognizing object is fluctuated for each image by conveyance. SOLUTION: The difference of luminance between a recognizing object P and the background and conveyance conditions or the like are previously inputted to a parameter input part 104 as parameters. While using these parameters, an end point detecting part 106 detects plural boundary points between the recognizing object P and the background area without being affected by a noise or dirt on the recognizing object P. A width detecting part 107 detects the vertical and lateral width of the recognizing object P and while using the detected width, an entire image position specifying part 108 specifies the position of the entire image as the recognizing object P. By collating the image inputted by an image input part 101 with reference image data in a reference image data memory 110, a recognizing part 109 recognizes the image of the recognizing object P.
