PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To maintain and inspect a fire detector with getting on a car, free a design of a building, and facilitate maintenance and inspection of the fire detector, by arranging the fire detector in a hoistway in a range accessible from the car when the car is at the highest position of the hoistway. SOLUTION: A car 2 lifted up and down in a hoistway and a counter weight 3 are guided by a pair of car guide rails 4a, 4b and a pair of weight guide rails 5a, 5b, and is suspended by a hoisting rope 6. A fire detector such as a smoke detector 18 fixes its mounting member to an auxiliary member 13d of a machine base frame 13. On a ceiling of the car 2, an inspection opening 2a is arranged at a position where it faces the detector 18 when the car 2 positions in the highest floor. An electric panel 17 for storing a control device 16 is arranged adjacent to the landing doors 15a, 15b in the highest floor, and a signal wire 18d between the smoke detector 18 provided for this and a disaster protection center is connected to a relay terminal table 18c to facilitate mounting of the smoke detector 18.
