Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To avoid injection of a liquid crystal by a disadvantageous capillary effect which requires a long time and to enable mass-production in a factory by applying a smectic liquid crystal layer in a thin film state on at least one of supporting substrates by printing. SOLUTION: A smectic liquid crystal layer or a mixture containing a smectic liquid crystal is applied on at least one of two substrates by printing, and these substrates are assembled. The printing method includes screen printing, offset printing, flexographic printing or other conventional printing methods. The substrates are bonded, heated and cooled. As a result, the liquid crystal is subjected to various kinds of phase transition and realigned. Also, curing of an adhesive frame is completed. In order to determine the proper viscosity in the printing process, viscosity is measured as a function of the shear rate and temp. Then the shear rate range concerning to the coating process is measured, and the measured viscosity is averaged in this range.
