PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the efficiency of application of a memory in the case of the breadth of paper to be printed narrower than the maximum breadth of paper, and solve troubles in the case of wide breadth by detecting the position of a paper feeding guide, providing means for securing dynamically the memory breadth of printing lines, and securing dynamically the memory breadth of printing lines in accordance with paper breadth. SOLUTION: The paper guide 3 includes a paper sensor 4 set to detect its position, and the breadth of paper 5 being forwarded is detected by a gate array(G/A) 6. When printing data is forwarded from a computer, CPU 7 operates to determine the breadth of paper, secure the printing line memory, and compare the breadth of printing of received printing data with the breadth of printing of secured printing line memory. If the breadth of printing of the printing data is wider than the maximum printing breadth of the printing line memory, an error message is sent to the computer. On the other hand, if the breadth of printing of the received printing data is the same as the breadth of printing of the printing line memory or narrower than this, printing is implemented.
