Zusammenfassung:	The two coils (1, 3) operating on the eddy-current principle are wired conventionally to a processor (5) which evaluates the signal variation due to a metallic damper (2) sliding in a direction (S) parallel to a scale (4). The novelty resides in the shape of the coils which are trapezoidal with width (b, b') decreasing steadily towards the ends of the scale. The angle (alpha) characteristic of the trapezoids is advantageously determined experimentally with regard for the desired range of linear measurement. Where no compensation of temp. drift is required, a single coil (1) is sufficient.
