PURPOSE: To decrease the scrap quantity of a lap by automatically breaking the lap after a lap roll is formed to a prescribed size by a pressing element movable between a pause position and a working position. CONSTITUTION: A pressing roller 9 which does not come into contact with the lap 4 in the pause position and presses the lap 4 to a winding-on roller 1 with prescribed force in the working position is disposed in the process of forming the lap 4 introduced via plural calender rollers 5, 6, 7 and 8 to the lap roll 3 on a pair of the winding-on rollers 1 and 2. The pressing roller 9 is made movable between both positions by a swiveling arm 10 with a cylinder 14 a hydraulic or pneumatic type. When the lap roll 3 of a preselectable size is formed by a controller 17, a drive assembly 16 is controlled to stop the calender rollers 5, 6, 7 and 8. The winding-on rollers 1 and 2 are further rotated somewhat and cylinder 14 is actuated to move the pressing roller 9 from the pause position to the working position, by which the lap 4 is broken.
