The controller includes a current source, a store (26) For digitalised speech, a speech output device and a switch for the speech output device. The support may be a sheet of telegramme form and data may be stored in delta-modulated form. The speech output may comprise a parallel/series converter (36) coupled to the store (26), a DAC (38) coupled to the converter and an electro-acoustic transducer. The transducer may include a low-pass filter (40), an amplifier (42) and a loudspeaker (44). The source may be a lithium cell and the switch a photosensor.
