Apparatus for automatically monitoring a cradle or frame 1' in a wire or cable stranding machine comprises for each cradle or frame 1' a permanent magnet 3' fixed to the cradle or frame and a Hall sensor 4' fixed to the inside of the stranding tube 2 which supply signals to a gating means 7 which also receives signals produced by a fixed magnet 3 and sensor 4 disposed on either side of a shutter 5 which rotates with the tube 2 and has a slot 6 therein. When the train of pulses from sensor 4' which necessarily results from an inadmissibly large swinging movement or rotary entrainment of the frame or cradle 1' is not in a condition of coincidence in respect of time with the pulses from the sensor 4, a braking signal is outputted by the conjunctive signal gating means 7 to a braking unit 8 which is connected downstream thereof.
