The invention comes within the technical sector of sewing machines for industrial use and relates to a sewing machine having a plurality of needles of the overcasting-machine type and to the overcasting stitch made with the said machine. According to the invention, there are provided at least three needles (1), (2), (3), located next to one another and aligned in a rectilinear direction, and supporting elements (6), (7) for the said needles (1), (2), (3), which serve for making it possible to remove any one or more needles themselves, a lower gripper (8) serving to cooperate with all the said needles (1), (2), (3), and an upper gripper (9) with a limited advance and to cooperate with the said needles (1), (2), (3), with the exception of the last needle (3) which is at a greater distance from the edge of the fabric. The overcasting stitch made according to the present invention is produced from at least five threads comprising at least three sewing threads, one thread of the lower gripper, or under-thread, and one thread of the upper gripper, or covering thread, which is not interlinked with the said sewing thread which is at a greater distance from the edge of the fabric.
