Zusammenfassung:In the processing of sulphidic copper and/or copper-zinc concentrates contg. iron by (i) suspension smelting in the presence of flux and oxygen to form a dispersed mixt. of slag and metallic copper or white matte; (ii) redn. of copper and zinc oxides in the molten slag with solid carbonaceous material to form a zinc vapour/gas mixt., metallic copper and a slag of low non-ferrous metal content; (iii) oxidn. of the zinc vapour/gas mixt. to form zinc oxide; and (iv) pptn. of the zinc oxide, the novelty is that (a) the flux is a basic flux of a mixt. of basic and silicate fluxes, supplied in amt. to ensure recovery of a highly basic slag at the end of stage (i), the slag having a SiO2 + Al2O3 : CaO + MgO + Fe2O3 + FeO wt. ratio of 0.01-0.33 and a CaO + MgO : Fe2O3 + FeO wt. ratio of 0.19-0.76; and (b) the solid carbonaceous material is used in amt. exceeding the stoichiometric amt. for redn. of the zinc and copper.
