Control process, involves (i) drawing the solidified strand from the mould and simultaneously feeding molten metal into the initial shell forming zone, in a predetermined duration t1; (ii) interrupting withdrawal for a predetermined duration t2 for welding of a freshly formed shell to the solidified strand and for shell thickening in the initial shell forming zone, while continuously monitoring the mould wall temp. in this zone; and (iii) extending the withdrawal interruption duration for a predetermined time according to changes in the monitored temp. The novelty is that withdrawal is only interrupted when no mould wall temp. fluctuations with the withdrawal cycle frequency occur with simultaneous drop in the mould wall temp., the interruption duration being increased to at least twice the withdrawal cycle duration to restore the strand shell.
