Zusammenfassung:	Process comprises admin. of phosphonoformic acid (I) of its physiologically acceptable salts. (I) inhibits the action of the virus and the growth of cells altered by the virus. Esp. for treating infections caused by herpes virus (esp. simplex types 1 and 2); varicella zoster virus; cytomegalo virus; the Epstein-Barr virus; types A and B influenza virus and papilloma virus. (I) has negligible effect on the host cells and in mice the LD50 of its Na salt is 2000-4000 mu moles/kg. A typical soln. comprises 2 g. tri-Na salt of (I), 38 g. isopropanol; 13.6 g. glycerol; HCL to pH 5.7 and water to 100 g.
