Zusammenfassung:Weighting agents having a hardness of at least 4.3, preferably at least 4.5, on the Mhos scale can be used in water-based drilling fluids, without encountering problems of abrasion on the drill string, bit etc., if a water-dispersible lubricant, (e.g. a long chain fatty acid or vegetable oil containing such an acid, with a surfactant) is included in the drilling fluid. Suitable weighting agents are ilmenite and non-micaceous hematite.
