Zusammenfassung:	Apparatus for the mechanical, thermal, or chemical treatment of free-flowing substances, particularly substances in suspension, comprises a vessel defining a substantially vertical chamber 1 into which the substance to be treated is introduced (e.g. via a duct 3) and through which the treating fluid flows from the bottom towards the top, the horizontal cross-sectional profile of the chamber being modified continuously or step by step from the bottom towards the top, e.g. by suitable shaping of the chamber wall and/or by internal fittings, such that the flow through the vessel is turbulent and is directed essentially in zig-zag fashion, whereby the dwell time of substances to be treated is optimized. Preferred apparatus comprises a plurality of the chambers 1 arranged and operating substantially in parallel (eg. Figs. 1 and 5); or such vessels may be annular and arranged coaxially. Crude salt may be worked with purified brine in the vessels.
