A process for the demineralization or partial demineralization of water containing salt, for example sea water, in which untreated water containing salt is compressed and fed to reverse osmosis apparatus (u/o) which separates the water into a concentrate stream (B) rich in salt and a permeate stream (P) poor in salt. The concentrate is fed through an expansion turbine (T) to recover pressure energy. When treating water with a salt content of more than 13 g/kg, the initial pressure (P11) of the untreated water is above 80 bar and the proportion of permeate to untreated water is above 0.4. When treating water with a salt content of less than 13 g/kg the initial pressure (P11) of the untreated water is above 60 bar and the proportion of permeate to untreated water is above 0.7.
