Zusammenfassung:Fe and Ti values are recovered from ilmenite by (a) crushing; (b) redn. roasting at 600-1000 degrees C in the presence of H2 and/or CO; (c) leaching with HCl soln.; (d) sepg. insoluble gangue; (e) pptg. TiO2 from the metal chloride soln. with Fe2O3; (f) sepg. the TiO2; (g) crystallising iron chloride from the soln.; (h) reducing most of the iron chloride to metallic Fe and HCl; (i) oxidising the rest of the iron chloride to Fe2O3; and (j) recycling the Fe2O3 to step (e). Reactions may be carried out at atmos. press., high yields of Ti are obtd. from relatively low grade ores; Fe values are recovered from the ore.
