A gripping device has a plurality of grippers 1 which revolve about a shaft 6 and open and close to twist together wrappers of confectionery. The jaws 6 of the grippers 1 are operated by means of thrust bars 3 axially movable inside tubes 2. A bushing 10 is mounted inside each tube and is supported by a thrust bearing 11 subjected to the action of cam rollers 13 rolling along cam tracks defined by cam 14A, 14B, 17. A compression spring 8 engages between a flange 7 of the bar 3 and a shoulder 4 in the tube 2 to bias the bar 3 in a direction axially away from the grippers and keep the jaws 6 of the associated gripper 1 open. A further compression spring 9 acts between the bushing 10 and the flange of the bar 3 to transfer jaw-closing thrust applied to the bearing 11 to the bar 3, said spring 9 taking up movement after the jaws have closed.
