Compsns. for promoting the growth of an animal comprise as active principle benzoyl derivs. of formula (I), where R1-R5 = H, 1-4C alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy or halogen; X = C0 or a gp of formula (i), R6, R7 = H or 1-3C alkyl; A = 1-8C alkylene; Y = 0Q or NR8R9; Q = H, 1-4C alkyl, a cation of an alkali or alkaline earth metal or a cation of a non-toxic organic base; R8, R9 = H, 1-4C alkyl or 2-4C 2-hydroxyalkyl, or R8 and R9 together with the N form as heterocyclic ring opt. including other heteroatoms;provided that when X is a ketal gp. and A is ethylene, the gp. NR8R9 is other than morpholino. Also claimed are cpds. (I) provided that, (1) when X = C0 and R1-R5 = H or alkoxy, (a) R8 and R9 are not a combination of H and an alkyl gp. or 2 alkyl gps. and the gp is not morpholino, (b) a is other than H, Me or Et; (2) when X = ketal and R1-R5 = H, alkyl or alkoxy, the gp. NR8R9 is other than morpholino.
