Zusammenfassung:The process and plant include a chamber (a) in which fresh MgCl2 is added to an electrolyte; an electrolyte purificn. chamber (b); a chamber (c) for sepg. Mg from the electrolyte; and a chamber (d) which divides the electrolyte into two streams (I,II). One stream (I) is returned to chamber (a) for enrichment with MgCl2; whereas the other (II) is fed through a row of electrolysis cells (e), and is then fed into chamber (c). The ratio of the two streams (I:II) is pref. 0.1-0.4:1. In one pref. plant, the molten salt electrolyte leaving chamber (b) is mixed with molten electrolyte leaving the last electrolysis cell in the inlet channel for chamber (c). The yield of Mg per unit of electrical energy is increased; and the purity of the electrolyte fed into the electrolysis cells is raised.
