The electrical resistivity of the bottom block at ambient temperature is closely matched to that of the metal at a temperature within the range 0 DEG to 100 DEG F below the solidus temperature of the metal, the two resistivities preferably being in a ratio of less than 1:2. The bottom block has a deeply hollowed out central section to improve start up conditions. The metal is cooled by water fed to its surface from a manifold 12.
