1419450 Producing Al from AlCl 3 TOTH ALUMINUM CORP 16 Oct 1973 [16 Oct 1972] 48120/73 Heading C7D Aluminium is produced by reacting liquid or gaseous aluminium chloride with solid, preferably powdered, manganese at temperatures and pressures at which the reactants maintain their respective phases, the preferred range being 180‹ to 600‹C 1 to 30 atmospheres. Although aluminium metal is normally separated from the product it is possible to produce an Mn-Al alloy ingot by this method. The reactions may be carried out with the AlCl 3 in gaseous form by passing the gas through a bed of Mn particles, Fig. (not shown); if the AlCl 3 is liquid it is added to a charge of Mn particles, Fig.2 (not shown), the process being adapted for batch operation Fig.3 (not shown) or continuous operation, Fig.4 (not shown). Inert metal salts, e.g. NaCl, CaCl 2 , KCI, MgCl 2 or BaCl 2 may be added to lower the vapour pressure of the AlCl 3 .
