According to the invention, 17-alpha-estradiol and its derivatives can be used preferably as antidepressant drugs, especially preferably as quick-acting antidepressant drugs. According to the invention, 17-alpha-estradiol of formula (I) and its derivatives can also be used for the treatment and/or prevention of postpartum depression, post-menopausal depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, memory disturbance associated with depression or bipolar depression.
