Zusammenfassung:	The invention relates to a manually actuatable or an automatic firearm (1), comprising a small- or medium-caliber barrel (2) and a barrel holder (4) accommodating the barrel (2). In order to achieve that the maximum recoil power of the aforementioned firearms (1) is less than in comparable known firearms, according to the invention the barrel (2) and the barrel holder (4) are elastically connected to one another via a hydraulic recoil brake (5), wherein the recoil brake (5) comprises at least one hydraulic cylinder (7) having a piston (8) located therein, said piston being axially movable relative to the hydraulic cylinder (7) and having a piston rod (9), and wherein the inner wall (11) of the hydraulic cylinder (7) has at least one axial orifice (13) for continuously connecting the cylinder chamber (14) of the hydraulic cylinder (7) in front of the recoiling piston (8) to the cylinder chamber (15) behind the recoiling piston (8). To this end, either the hydraulic cylinder (7) is connected to the barrel (2) and the piston rod (9) is connected to the barrel holder (4), or the hydraulic cylinder (7) is connected to the barrel holder (4) and the piston rod (9) is connected to the barrel (2).
