Method for decomposing an image consisting of pixels to cartoon image and/or texture image

The invention is a method for decomposing an image consisting of pixels to cartoon image and/or texture image, comprising the steps of producing a plurality of intermediate cartoon images (S100) by filtering the image with the low-pass filter while changing the value of a filtering parameter of the low-pass filter within a range, and deriving intermediate texture images (S102) by subtracting the intermediate cartoon images from the image, dividing the intermediate cartoon images and the intermediate texture images into cells (S110), assigning blocks including the cells to each of the cells on said intermediate images (S112), and determining measures of independence for each of the blocks on the basis of the intermediate cartoon images and the intermediate texture images associated with each value of the filtering parameter (S114), determining a filtering parameter image (S120) divided into cells corresponding to the division of the intermediate cartoon images and the intermediate texture images so that selecting those filtering parameter values for pixels of each of the cells of the parameter image for which the measure of independence determined for the block assigned to the cell is minimal, and determining pixels of the cartoon image and/or the texture image for each of the cells (S130) by selecting for the pixels of the cell corresponding pixels of the intermediate image produced with the filtering parameter values selected for the pixels of the corresponding cell of the parameter image.
