Zusammenfassung:The invention relates to a process for the desulphurising and fine demetallising of high-boiling petroleum hydrocarbon crude oils by hydrogenation on a combination of catalysts which contain compounds of subgroup VI of the periodic system of elements and of the iron group as well as a porous component. The catalyst bed is a two-component bed, the one catalyst having a maximum of reaction pores in the pore-radius range of 2.25-3.75 nm and the other catalyst having a maximum of reaction pores in the pore-radius range of 4.25-6.25 nm. In the case of both types of catalyst, less than 5% of the total pore volume relates to pores having radii of 25-7500 mu m. The two different types of catalyst may be present in the reactor as two spatially separated layers or in the form of a mixed bed. For the protection of the two-component catalyst bed, the petroleum hydrocarbon crude oil can, if necessary, be conducted over a layer of shaped catalyst of larger dimensions before flow through the catalyst bed.
