Also claimed is the use of (III) for the synthesis of racemic 6,8-dimercaptooctanoic acid, (+)-6,8-dihydrolipoic acid, (-)-6,8-dihydrolipoic acid, racemic alpha -lipoic acid, (+)- alpha -lipoic acid or (-)- alpha -lipoic acid.
