The present invention preferably relates to a smoking article which is capable of producing substantial quantities of aerosol, both initially and over the useful life of the product, without significant thermal degradation of the aerosol former and without the presence of substantial pyrolysis or incomplete combustion products or sidestream aerosol. The technical result of the invention is to reduce the amount of the toxic agents expired during smoking by means of reducing the amount of the carbon monoxide. The smoking article comprises a short combustible carbonaceous fuel element having the length of at least 30 mm with a plurality of peripheral passageways. The fuel element has additional passageways, one of them being disposed coaxially to its longitudinal axle and the rest - in the central part.
