The present invention relates to a smoking article which produces an aerosol that resembles tobacco smoke, but contains no more than a minimal amount of incomplete combustion or pyrolysis products. The technical result of the invention is to improve the smoking properties of the item by increase in the aerosole. The smoking article comprises a short combustible carbonaceous fuel element 1 on the end of combustion and on the opposite is mouthend piece 2and a separate means creating the aerosole comprising the substrate 3 are arranged in a heat exchange relationship, thereby causing aerosol formation without significant degradation of the aerosol former. The length of the fuel element is 3-30 mm, its density is 0,5-1,5 g/cm3 and the carbon content is 80-100%.
