In a machine according to claim 1 of Specification 931,796 the flange forming means operates inwardly to form an inwardly projecting marginal flange on the upper. The outer mould 234 comprises a resilient pad. The upper assembled on the heated heelward part 226 of the inner form is gripped and stretched toewardly by operation of treadle rod 214 which first closes joint 206 and then rocks bracket 210, the latter being adjustable heightwise by means of handwheel 212, and is clamped to the forepart 325 of the inner form by side clamps 218 operated via toggle 222 by means of handle 224. The outer form 234 is yieldably mounted, by means of an adjustable spring, on a carriage 236, and is moved to engage the back-seam of the shoe by means of a handle 24 operating via toggle 239. The flange former 242 is fixed to carriage 236, and when the outer form yields on engagement with the shoe the flange former continues to move with the carriage and wipes the margin of the upper inwardly. A pneumatic device 232 is then actuated by means of valve 233 and acts via pivoted lever 230 to force the inner form part 226 still harder into the outer form 234. The latter yields a little more and causes a slight additional wipe to take place. The single wiper 242 is heated electrically, and may be replaced by a pair of conventional type heated hinged wipers.
