A frigerated rail vehicle has a metal frame 1 wheels 3 and buffers 5, and a body comprising a skeleton of tubular ribs and frames 10 of a plastics material to which is attached inner and outer layers 6, 7 of reinforced polyester resin between which is interposed a layer 8 of expanded thermally insulated material. In addition to frames 10 the floor has stiffeners 11. Side wall extensions are attached to the frame 1 by bolts 12, Fig. 1. Two partitions 19 form cells 20 for ice which is placed in the cells through doors 30 accessible from platforms 35 having steps 34. The cells 20 are lined with panels 23 of metal lathing, the floors being of a grating 25 of a plastics material allowing water to drain into a sump and out through pipes 28, Fig. 3. Each partition has a lockable double leaf door 21. The side walls of a freight zone between partitions 20 are ribbed panels but the floor and ceiling are smooth. Extra stiffening members are embedded in the walls of cells 20. Two fans 39 in each partition 19 pass cold air into the freight zone which has floor panels 41, of reinforced polyester resin and of a honeycomb structure, hinged at 44 to the walls and are spaced from the floor by rests; the central panels 411, adjacent doors 46, are hinged at 45 to adjoining panels 41; these panels are folded against the walls when not required.
