To permit of the sloping of the sides of a trench being formed by a bucket ladder excavator there is associated with the ladder 11 of the excavator sawing devices 1. The devices are preferably in the form of reciprocable cuttercarrying chains 1 that are eccentrically connected at 12, 13 to the bucket chain-reversing pulleys 14, 141 at the free end of the bucket ladder and at the other end are connected by a cable 7 passing about pulleys 8, 9 on the ends of a variable length beam 10 secured transveresly of the ladder.
